Reminder folks, our Holiday Party is this Sunday! Here are the details and directions again, for your reference:

  • What: Metro Anime Holiday Party 2010
  • Where: Houston Street Center/Chinatown YMCA, 273 Bowery, Corner of Bowery and Houston St., Manhattan
  • When: **This Sunday** December 19, 1:30–6:30pm
  • How: Potluck! Coordinate with me [Mandisa Washington] offlist about food/drinks/entertainment, but feel free to ask general questions on-list.
  • How Much: $5 per person, paid at the door [plus coordinated pot-luck contribution]. It’s also great if you help out with the party in some way.
  • Why: So we can all have a good time together!

So far I’ve heard from a handful of people about bringing food, snacks, and paper goods, but that still leaves a lot of room for folks to participate. We will have some heating/cooling options available for our food, so if you have an idea what you’re bringing, please let me know. For those who are still deciding, we have a few necessaries that are still unclaimed:

Needs:

  • Hot & Cold drink cups (we’re not brand-picky, but the 12–15oz. plastic cups hold a decent amount of soda & ice, while the paper hot-cups are very eco-friendly :)
  • Paper towels (Napkins were claimed already, but we could always use more)
  • Drinks!! (Any combination of soda, juice, tea, or water is fine, just no alcohol)
  • Somebody to go on an ice run

There’s a nearby Met Food Supermarket on Mulberry & Prince Sts. (1 block South of Houston St.) if you want to stop and pick something up on the way.

Okay, as for directions, there are several ways to get to the Center by public transportation:

  • the F train to 2nd Avenue station (Walk 2 medium-length blocks West along Houston St. to the Bowery)
  • the 6 train to Bleecker St. station *or* the D/F/M trains to Broadway-Lafayette station (Walk 5 short blocks East along Houston St. to the Bowery—head away from Broadway, towards the Bank of America)
[Note that the B train does not run on weekends]
  • the N/R trains to Prince St. station (Walk 1 long block uptown to Houston St., then East along Houston St. as above)
  • the M103 bus goes uptown-downtown along 3rd Avenue/the Bowery, just get off at Houston St.

UPDATE: In my earlier email, I mentioned the M21 crosstown bus on Houston Street, but there’s no weekend service as of the last wave of budget cuts. So West Siders (1, C/E trains) need to change their travel plans—it’s like a mile walk otherwise.

Drivers—there are several neighborhood parking garages in the vicinity, and some street parking, but note that the Whole Foods doesn’t have a garage.

Once you’ve found the Center, everybody has to sign-in. From the street entrance, take either the stairs (long flight) or the elevator down to the Cellar Level. There are two desks, you want the University Settlement info desk. Just tell them you’re with Metro Anime, and they’ll direct you upstairs (different elevator), to the 2nd Floor (Classroom Level). It’s a short twisty hall, but you should see/hear us—we’re slated for Classroom #1, but I’ll try to post a sign on the door just in case. (There are some pics posted here—http://flowerstorm.net/disa/Metro/holiday2010.html)

Any questions, feel free to ask. Looking forward to seeing everybody who can make it!

So we’re officially confirmed for our party space—yeah! I took a few pictures, but those will go up with the directions, probably tomorrow.

For folks trying to decide what food to bring, here’s the rundown on our heating/cooling options:

  • Microwave—Miles has graciously offered to shlep his microwave over to the party for our use. So if you have something that can be heated up this way, just remember to pack it in a microwaveable dish. And of course everybody clean up any spills/splashes when you’re done—we’ll have plenty of napkins handy.
  • Cooler—Dan & I are bringing our super-size Igloo cooler w/ cold packs to keep perishable foods cold (like cheese, salads, or deviled eggs... mmm). We’ll also set up a tabletop serving-rack with ice-water to keep less-perishable foods cold & easily-servable (veggies, dip, salsa). If we can get a volunteer to go on an ice run, we’ve also got a styrofoam ice box.
  • Warmer—Aside from the microwave, we can do some low-level warming with a tabletop serving-rack with a couple of sterno-burners. It is *very important* that people not mess around with the sternos—they can set things on fire (like carpet, clothes, and people!) so *be careful*. That said, they’re really useful, so if you’re bringing something that should warm up this way, pack it in one of those half-size aluminum trays you can get at any good 99-cent store.
  • Room temperature/finger foods—Probably the biggest group of stuff to be brought. We’ve got several tables at our disposal, plus a countertop with working sink & cabinets, so we can set up a pretty good buffet here. There’ll be plenty of plates, utensils, napkins, etc. so let your tastebuds run wild.

The room isn’t super-huge, but it’s airy, windowed, and carpeted, so it’s a nice change of pace from the basement at Maui’s. On the carpeting, do try to wipe up any spills—we want to try to leave the room in decent shape. We can decorate the walls (using painter’s tape), so if you want to bring some tinsel & lights from home (or cut-paper snowflakes!), we can work with that. :)

Any other questions?

Okay, so it sounds like as I’d figured, money’s just too tight for the “swanky” right now, but folks *do* want a party. Yeah! So I dug a bit deeper, and found a different space, in some ways even better-appointed and better-located than the previous one, with a much more reasonable fee: **$5 per person** (Sweet!)

Pending confirmation, our Holiday Party 2010 will be held Sunday, Dec. 19, 1:30–6:30pm, at the Houston Street Center, aka. Chinatown YMCA, on Houston Street & the Bowery. It’s located in the same building as the Lower East Side Whole Foods, and it’s a few blocks east of MoCCA, if you went to any of our events there.

I’ve reserved a windowed classroom for us, complete with sink, projector screen, clean bathrooms across the hall, and even wi-fi. No refrigerator here, but Dan & I’ll bring our super-size cooler to keep the cold foods cold.

Since the Center is more family-oriented, the hours are shifted earlier, and alcohol is out (we have no liquor license *sadness*). But the neighborhood is full of cozy places where we can have a cocktail-augmented “after party” if folks want to keep the holiday cheer going.

Food and entertainment are the same as before—bring your own potluck dishes and snacks, soft drinks can be bought elsewhere or picked up at Whole Foods (probably more expensive, but it’s a shorter carry-distance), and of course we’ll have music, games, and other frivolity.

The Center is pretty accessible by public transportation—the 2nd Avenue stop on the F train is closest (2 long blocks), but the Bleecker St. (6 train) and Broadway-Lafayette stations (D, F, M trains) are both about 4–5 short blocks away. [Note that the B train does not run on weekends.] By bus, the M103 runs down 3rd Ave/Bowery (goes near to Union Square), and the M21 runs crosstown on Houston St (goes across to the West Side trains: 1, C/E, N/R). The Whole Foods doesn’t have dedicated parking (shock!) but there are a bunch of garages in the area, plus the usual street parking (although this is the LES, so watch those weekend parking signs!).

Again, this is still pending final confirmation, and hopefully I’ll have some pictures and in-building directions to post next week. I’d love it if folks could tell me offlist what they’re bringing, especially if you want to help out with “must-haves” like soda/juice/water, ’heavy’ foods, paper goods & utensils, games & music, decorations, etc. And of course, the nimble of foot and strong of arm *will be* needed for the occasional store run (like for ice), so if you want to volunteer for that, go right ahead. Folks to help with setup & cleanup are always welcome as well!

Here are the details in convenient bullet-form.

  • What: Metro Anime Holiday Party 2010
  • Where: Houston Street Center/Chinatown YMCA, 273 Bowery, Corner of Bowery and Houston St., Manhattan
  • When: **Sunday** December 19, 1:30–6:30pm
  • How: Potluck! Coordinate with me offlist about food/drinks/entertainment, but feel free to ask general questions on-list.
  • How Much: $5 per person, paid at the door [plus coordinated pot-luck contribution]. It’s also great if you help out with the party in some way.
  • Why: So we can all have a good time together!

I know this is pretty short notice, but this year’s been hell on everybody, and I think this party is a nice, easy (now inexpensive!) way to ease out the year. Nothing wrong with January, but I always feel like December feels more holiday-ey. The cost sounded like the major factor nudging people towards a January party, so hopefully this is a better option.

Ciao!
Mandisa
